Why "It Came Out of Nowhere"

Are you experiencing pain but don’t remember hurting yourself? Or did your pain seemingly come out of nowhere when performing a simple, everyday task?

It can be confusing when healthcare providers ask what you did to hurt yourself but you don’t have an answer. Typically when this is the case, your pain is coming from what is called an “overuse injury.”

Overuse injuries occur when the capacity of our bodies cannot tolerate the demands we put on them. In most cases, there are two major categories that lead to these types of injuries:

 1)    Large increase in activity over a short period of time

When athletes are training for an event and ramp up training intensity too quickly, their bodies are not given sufficient time to adapt. The capacity of their muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons, etc. end up falling short of the demands placed on them and begin to break down.

 2)    Repetitive movement with incomplete mechanics

When training with incorrect form or with movement limitations, this changes the demands we place on our bodies. Our bodies are extremely resilient and are built to withstand a lot of stress. However, eventually our bodies reach a point where they can no longer handle the demands we are placing on them. Pain typically comes from “the straw that broke the camel's back” - the “straw” being the seemingly easy task that brought on an increase in pain.

In most cases, starting to relieve symptoms can be as easy as  temporarily scaling down your training routine. Additionally, fixing movement patterns and progressively increasing the capacity of your body to handle your activities can help move you in the right direction.

We work with athletes of all kinds to find specific movement limitations and build a progressive program based on improving those limitations.

If you’ve been dealing with something for weeks, months, or years, it doesn’t have to be like this.

We work with all sorts of active people in the Dayton area so they can have the confidence to continue doing what they love to in the communities they love to be a part of!
